Flamingo Tongue

A colorful mollusk commonly found in tropical waters feeding on sea whips and sea fans is the Flamingo tongue, Cyphoma givvosum (Linne). The vibrant orange expandable mantle covers and protects a cream colored shell. Due to their restricted and specialized habitat, species of Cyphoma have evolved a competitive way of life that is seldom seenin mollusks. The male controls a major part of the sea fan upon which he lives and will ward off other males that infringe on his territory.
